Causes of death
Here are some interesting facts to pass around...
(Please note that the child deaths and murder numbers [below] do not include those killed in the womb--abortion--because the National Safety Council does not deem these most precious ones as human. The numbers would be fantastically inflated if these were also counted properly.)
- Single-mother-household-related (SMH) child deaths per 100,000 SMHs: 44.4
- Non-SMH-related child deaths per 100,000 non-SMHs: 5.5
- Total child deaths per 100,000 children: 5.2
- Vehicle-related child deaths per 100,000 children: 1.18
- Vehicle-related child deaths per 100,000 licensed drivers: 0.83
- Gun-related accidental child deaths per 100,000 children: 0.08
- Gun-related accidental child deaths per 100,000 non-SMH children: 0.02
- Doctor-related deaths per 100,000 people: 83
- Vehicle-related deaths per 100,000 licensed drivers: 23.8
- Gun-related accidental deaths per 100,000 guns: 0.6
- Gun-related accidental deaths per 100,000 people: 0.5
- Rapes per 100,000 women: 0.8
- False imprisonment for rapes, per 100,000 men: 188.2
- Gun-related defenses (successful) per 100,000 gun-owners: 312,500
In 1999, the lifetime odds of being killed by:
- defense by firearm (meaning you're the bad guy): 1 in 11,896
- unknown intent by firearm: 1 in 10,978
- accidental firearm discharge: 1 in 4,317
- murder by firearm: 1 in 328
- non-suicide death by firearm: 1 in 290
- suicide by firearm: 1 in 214
- murder (by any means): 1 in 211
- suicide (by any means): 1 in 122
- transportation accident: 1 in 77
- non-transportation accident: 1 in 69
- medical malpractice: 1 in 14 (the data for this number had to be gleaned from a variety of sources, because it's not tracked by the government)
The lifetime odds of successfully defending yourself with a firearm (for gun-owners): 1 in 0.42 (the data for this number also had to be gleaned from a variety of sources, because it's not readily tracked by the government). This means every gun-owner in America is likely to successfully defend himself with a firearm more than twice in his lifetime. [ Note: Non-gun-owners obviously cannot defend themselves with a firearm. They make up the bulk of the "murder (by any means)" statistic.]
This means:
- You're 8 times more likely to die as a child in a single-mother-household than a non-SMH.
- You're 41.9 times more likely to be falsely accused of rape (as a man) than be killed by non-suicide firearm discharge (regardless of sex).
- You're 3.8 times more likely to be killed by a transportation accident than by non-suicide firearm discharge.
- You're 4.2 times more likely to be killed by a non-transportation accident than by non-suicide firearm discharge.
- You're 20.7 times more likely to be killed by medical malpractice than by non-suicide firearm discharge.
- You're 690.5 times more likely to successfully defend yourself with a firearm (as a gun-owner) than die by non-suicide firearm discharge (regardless of gun ownership).
