Baptism

Baptism

After a personal decision to submit to the Lord through Jesus is made, it is customary to follow up with water baptism, symbolizing the cleansing of our sins in preparation for eternal salvation. It is also considered an act of obedience to demonstrate God's Lordship over His newly adopted child. Wayne is honored to perform this rite in the Lord's service and honor.

Baptism being an ancient Jewish rite of immersion in a mikvah, it is most often performed today by immersion in a small pool, river, or even a lake. The Word of God is not dogmatic about the form of baptism, so alternate ways of symbolizing the washing of our sins may be considered.

Baptism is usually done after a choice for salvation is made, since it symbolizes the washing away of our sins. On the other hand, baptism is sometimes performed on those too young to make this choice, as a symbol of the parents' decision to dedicate their child wholly to the Lord--in anticipation of the child's upcoming choice to follow the Lord, if you will. Note that the act of water baptism is not in itself a saving act. Only a personal choice to submit to the Lord through Jesus' atoning sacrifice can lead to salvation.

In addition to water baptism, the Word speaks of baptism in the Holy Spirit of God and in fire. While there is much debate over baptism in fire (which will not be covered here), baptism in the Spirit is clearly described. This is an immersion in God's living Presence that fills us with intimate knowledge of Him and His will, strengthening us to obey Him in ways possibly beyond our own power. Your first baptism in the Holy Spirit may or may not accompany a water baptism, or even your choice for eternal salvation, or it may follow some time later; and such baptism in the Spirit need not be a one-time event, but you may continually be refilled by the Holy Spirit. The gifts of the Spirit (charisma), such as tongues, healing, and prophecy, may also accompany this baptism--for the edification of believers.
